At Comprehensive Dentistry of Troy, our goal is to provide thorough, thoughtful care. Our most common and preferred way for new patients to begin care is with a new patient comprehensive exam appointment. This allows us to evaluate your oral health completely and to create a safe, personalized treatment plan for you. During our comprehensive exams, we will gather diagnostic information by reviewing your medical and dental history, taking digital dental x-rays, and conducting periodontal charting to assess your gum and bone health to determine the appropriate cleaning technique for your mouth. The doctor will also perform an oral cancer screening and examine your gums and teeth in order to provide a clear explanation of findings and work with you to form a treatment plan that best fits your wants and needs. Our healthy new patient comprehensive exam and cleaning appointments last about an hour and half for adults.
In some cases, if a patient is experiencing pain or swelling or has a specific concern, like a broken tooth, an "emergency" appointment may be requested. These visits are typically 40-60 minutes long and include a review of relevant medical history related to your concern, a focused examination of the problem area, appropriate X-rays only of the problem area, as well as a diagnosis and treatment recommendations. Treatment can be provided at this appointment, if time permits. This problem-focused appointment is not intended to provide detailed information about the overall health of the rest of the mouth. These problem-focused exams typically last 40-60 minutes. Because of this, a comprehensive exam may still be recommended at a later date.
The frequency of dental visits depends on your individual oral health needs. While many people are familiar with the “twice-a-year” recommendation, that schedule is not appropriate for everyone. At Comprehensive Dentistry of Troy, we determine visit frequency based on your medical and dental history, gum and bone health, and dental risk factors, not a one-size-fits-all timeline. For patients with healthy gum and bones and no active dental disease, we typically recommend routine preventive visits every six months. These visits typically include periodontal charting and check up x-rays once a year, a cleaning, and an examination by the doctor. For patients that have high cavity rates or have active or previously treated gingivitis (gum disease) or periodontal disease (gum and bone disease), more frequent periodontal maintenance cleanings and exams might be recommended typically every 3-4 months.
If you are experiencing pain, swelling, or another concern, a problem-focused visit may be recommended outside of your routine schedule. These visits are intended to address a specific issue and do not replace regular preventive care and maintenance visits.
Individualized scheduling matters because it helps us establish the appropriate visit frequency to allow us to detect problems early, prevent progression of gum and bone disease, protect existing dental work, support long-term oral and overall health goals. Your recommended visit schedule that is appropriate for you can and will be adjusted if your oral health changes.
The short answer is “yes,” but not every visit. Dental X-rays play an important role in diagnosing conditions that cannot be seen during a visual exam alone. They allow us to evaluate areas between the teeth, below the gumline, and within the bone—often identifying concerns before symptoms are present. At Comprehensive Dentistry of Troy, X-rays are recommended only when clinically necessary and x-ray exposure frequency is tailored to your individual medical history, oral health, and risk factors.
Dental X-rays help us detect:
When problems are caught early through X-rays, treatment is often more conservative.
For example, a cavity detected early may only require a filling, rather than progressing to a crown, root canal, or extraction if left untreated. Early detection allows us to preserve more natural tooth structure and avoid more extensive treatment whenever possible.
We follow the American Dental Association (ADA) x-ray guidelines and use digital dental X-rays, which expose patients to very low levels of radiation. In fact, our modern digital x-rays reduce radiation exposure by 90% compared to older film x-rays. In many cases, the exposure is comparable to or less than what we encounter during normal everyday activities. As a comparison, the amount of dental radiation exposure experienced during a typical x-ray series at the dentist is comparable to sleeping next to someone for a year (due to natural body potassium). Furthermore, a single airplane flight from New York to Los Angeles exposes you to roughly 8 times more radiation than a dental x-ray.
A complete/full mouth series of dental X-rays (which provides a comprehensive view of the teeth, roots, and supporting bone) is typically taken every 3–5 years, depending on your oral health and risk factors.
Most patients receive a routine check-up series of X-rays approximately once per year at one of their cleaning visits. This typically includes four cavity-detecting X-rays of the back teeth and three X-rays of the front teeth (two upper x-rays and one lower x-ray). This series allows us to monitor for cavities, bone changes, and other concerns not visible during a clinical exam.
If you are experiencing discomfort, or if treatment such as a crown, bridge, or root canal is being evaluated or completed, we will take a targeted X-ray of the specific area involved. These focused images help ensure accurate diagnosis and precise treatment.
If you had x-rays taken recently at another office, they can be sent to us with your permission via email to admin@yourtroyohiodentist.com and we will import them into your chart with our office.
Yes! Comprehensive Dentistry of Troy is happy to care for children of all ages. We enjoy building long-term relationships with families and helping children develop healthy dental habits from an early age.
Your child can have their first dental visit as soon as their first tooth comes in (this usually happens around 6 months of age), as long they are able to cooperate with us. This allows the visit to be comfortable and positive. The treatment completed at each visit is age and behavior appropriate. At minimum, an exam is completed. Cleanings are completed after this, if the visit is going well. We typically begin taking x-rays on kids between age 5 and 6, unless a problem arises before this. We will also do any necessary work needed, like fillings, on children. We also offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to help create relaxing treatment environments for kids, when needed. Pediatric referrals to a pediatric dental specialist are typically only made if a child needs extensive treatment that would require sedation or has challenging behavior or developmental issues that are outside the scope of a general dentist. If a referral is needed, it is always done with your child’s comfort, safety, and best outcome in mind, and we will remain involved in coordinating their care.
Whether your child is coming in for their very first visit or continuing routine care, our goal is to provide thoughtful, comprehensive dentistry that is focused on establishing proper oral health and development in a welcoming environment for the entire family.
Our goal at Comprehensive Dentistry of Troy is to provide as much of your care in-house as possible. We believe continuity of care matters, and we are proud to offer a wide range of services that allow many patients to receive the care they need right here in our office. Many specialty procedures can now be completed in-house, making it easier and more convenient than ever to move forward with treatment without unnecessary referrals. Here are some examples of common procedures and treatments we are typically able to treat in our office:
While we offer many advanced services, there are still some times when a referral is in your best interest. We may recommend a referral when:
In summary, a complex situation can require care beyond what is appropriate to complete in a general dentist practice setting.
A referral does not mean that you are being “passed off” and can’t return to our office for future care. Instead, referrals are part of a coordinated care approach to get you the best possible care at the time. After making a necessary referral, we will remain involved, we will receive referral reports from specialists updating and informing us on your care, and we will continue your routine and ongoing dental care.
We work with most private dental insurance plans and are happy to help you understand how your dental benefits may apply to your care.
We are in-network with:
While we are only in-network with a limited number of plans, most private dental insurance plans do allow for out-of-network billing and benefits. In many cases, out-of-network dental insurance benefits reimburse at a similar or better level as when seeing an in-network dentist.
The key difference with out-of-network care is that an out-of-network insurance company does not set our fee schedule for our office, since there is no contract with that insurance company. This means that out-of-network patient co-pays can either be lower or higher than the fees in our contracts with in-network insurance companies. We will work with you and your out-of-network insurance company to process your claims based on your plan’s out-of-network allowance.
Regardless of whether you have in-network or out-of-network dental insurance benefits, we are happy to submit claims on your behalf so you can maximize your dental insurance benefits.
At this time, we are not able to work with or bill Medicaid, CareSource, or any similar government-assisted dental plans.
Lastly, we believe that insurance should never dictate treatment recommendations. Our recommendations are based on what is clinically appropriate and in your best long-term interest—not on insurance limitations. Insurance is a helpful tool, but your oral health always comes first. Our goal is to work with you to ensure you receive the care you need while clearly understanding how your benefits can be applied in your best interests.
You are always welcome at Comprehensive Dentistry of Troy, even if you do not have dental insurance. Many of our patients do not carry dental insurance, and we believe that access to quality dental care should not depend on having an insurance plan. If you do not have dental insurance, you can still receive the same high-quality, comprehensive care as a patient that has dental insurance benefits. Our treatment recommendations are based on your clinical needs, not dental insurance benefits or limitations. Our team will review treatment options and fees with you so there are no surprises. In fact, some patients find that paying directly for care provides greater flexibility and transparency than working within the limitations of an insurance plan.
For patients without insurance or for those who choose to pay directly, we offer a courtesy discount of 5% when payment is made in full at the start of treatment using cash or check. We also accept all major credit cards, including American Express — go ahead and get those points! 😉
For patients who prefer to spread payments out over time, we also accept CareCredit to help you fit your treatment into your budget. CareCredit offers zero-interest financing options when the balance is paid in full within the designated promotional timeframe (typically 12 months). Our team is happy to help you review available options and even assist with the CareCredit application process.
If you have questions about payment options or would like to discuss financial arrangements before scheduling, our team is always happy to help.
Whether you're visiting for a routine check-up or a more advanced procedure, we ensure your oral health is in the best hands, helping you achieve a confident, healthy smile.
